Q: What is Hydroponic technology?

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in a water-based, nutrient-rich solution. Instead of using soil, Rise Garden plant root systems are supported by peat moss. By allowing plants direct contact with the nutrient solution, hydroponic plants mature 25-30% faster than the same plants grown in soil. Hydroponic plants grown in Rise Gardens are also chemical-free and use less water than traditional gardening techniques.

Q: What is the difference between the short and tall base gardens?

Our Single Short garden is designed for shorter, quick-grow plants like herbs, lettuces, flowers and strawberries. The Single Short Garden comes with our quarterly refill plan, designed for you to get the most out of your garden. Our Single Tall Garden is perfect for larger, longer-producing plants like tomatoes and peppers.

Q: Why do I only use Spout & Thrive nutrients when I have a short level?

Our three-part nutrient mixes are separated to ensure your plants grow best when they are young and old. The sprout mixture includes all the macronutrients your plants need to grow healthy when they are in their vegetative state (they are only growing their stems and leaves). The blossom mixture includes all the macronutrients a plant needs when they are in their fruiting stage (growing not only stems and leaves, but flowers and fruits). Finally, the thrive mixture includes all of the micronutrients for your plants that helps all stages of life and will always be needed. If you never grow any flowering or fruiting plants, you’ll never use the blossom mixture.

Q: How much can I grow in each level?

Each level supports up to 12 plants at a time. However, depending on what varietals you plant and how large they may grow, you may choose to provide more space for plants like tomatoes and peppers.

Q: What is the Rise Smart Garden made out of?

Your Rise Garden is made out of wood, metal, plastic and science. Most of your Rise Garden is recyclable and we can help you with that.

Q: What maintenance is needed for the Rise Smart Garden?

Once a week you need to add water and nutrients to your garden. When your plants reach maturity or have outgrown the unit, our app will notify you that it’s time to harvest your crops. Once every 6 months you should completely clean out your system using our all-natural cleaning solution. It should take about 30-45 minutes to clean, depending on how many levels you have.

Q: Do I need to use the app?

While it isn’t required to use our app, we highly recommend it. The app helps you track your plants growth and water-level sensing features notify you when your water is running low. The app’s nutrient calculator provides custom recommendations on optimal nutrient plans for your unique garden and the growth stage of your plants. The app also allows you to set your light schedule and other custom settings.

Q: What are the garden’s wifi requirements?

Due to the type of microprocessor on board our smart garden, you cannot use 5Ghz and must use 2.4Ghz (if you have a 5G wifi, you should also have a 4G wifi). All wifi providers and types of routers are able to connect.

Q: How often do I need to clean my Rise Garden?

In order to maximize growth, we recommend cleaning your system every 4 months and we strongly recommend going no longer than 6 months. Cleaning includes emptying your system of all plants, removing all water, and using our all-natural cleaning agent. Not cleaning your system can lead to unpleasant smells and a build-up of left-over nutrients.

Q: Where in my house should I put my hydroponic garden?

Rise Gardens can be placed anywhere in the home. They come with a light source, so there is no need to place it near a window. Please keep in mind that you will need to add water weekly and clean the unit from every 4-6 months.

Q: How do I add water?

You should add water through the service door on the left-hand side of your first lowest level. Adding water to higher levels could lead to unwanted spilling. It is also very important to never fill your system past the max fill line. If you do so, you risk overflowing your system and getting water on the floor. To avoid this, simply open your cabinet door and watch your water level on your water bin. This will also be reflected on your water level lights.

Q: How do I add nutrients?

Our app’s nutrient calculator will tell you exactly how much of each nutrient to add. If you don’t have our app, you can use our laminated sheet provided with every unit to determine what nutrients.

Q: How much water does this use?

Our base unit can hold a total of 5 gallons of water, with 4 gallons in the water tank and 1 gallon in the tray. Every added level (no matter if its a tall or short level) adds 1 more gallon to your total volume.

1 level = 5 gallons

2 levels = 6 gallons

3 levels = 7 gallons

Q: How do I keep bugs out of my Rise Garden?

In order to keep bugs out of your system, we recommend only using Rise Gardens’ plant pods with your system. It's also important to clean your system as directed.

Q: Why ship quarterly?

In order to limit the amount of packaging, and reduce the carbon footprint of our deliveries, we ship you all you need to grow every 3 months. If we shipped you every month, you would have 3x the cardboard and 3x the distance traveled by your delivery truck. We are working to find ways that we can cut back even more.

Q: Will this affect the humidity and cause mold in my home?

In an early trial growth we grew in a 7' x 11' x9' (693 cubic feet) room with minimal air flow and office level air conditioning. We were growing from October to December, and saw a 19% point increase in relative humidity with four 2-level gardens running inside and an average air temp of 74º F. So, you can imagine somewhere between 2.375 and 7.125 increase in relative humidity for a similar sized room, depending on how many garden levels you have. As far as respiration per plant, that varies so much based on the plant variety and age that it's easier for us to just estimate the increase in relative humidity.

All that is to say, the systems have very little to no affect on the humidity in a room.

Plant Questions

Q: Will my food taste good?

Absolutely. We use our specialized nutrient algorithm to give your plants the correct mix of nutrients to maximize growth and flavor.

Q: Are hydroponic grown plants as nutritious as plants grown in soil?

If you grew your plants in your own garden, these plants will be more nutritious. There is no way to compete with the power of sunlight and good soil (its just the best). However, if you got your produce from a grocery store, there is a good chance that it was transported from a farm very far away and thus had lost most of its nutrients due to transit time. There is also a good chance that it was sprayed with pesticides or other chemicals to make it grow faster. If this is the case, then our produce will be more nutritious.

Q: What are the best plants to grow?

The plants that we have hand selected to be in our catalog were chosen for their ability to grow robustly in a hydroponics setting, and the correct size so that they don’t grow outside the lights of your garden.

If you are new to hydroponics and gardening, we recommend sticking with our salad and herbs mixes, as those plants need very little maintenance.

Q: How do I change out plants?

To change out a plant simply harvest the leaves or fruit from your plant, cut it at the base, carefully pull the net cup out with the roots attached, throw out or compost your roots, and clean the net cup. We recommend using a 1:2 vinegar to water mix whenever cleaning your system. Soap can leave residue and potentially unwanted bubbles.

Q: What can I grow in the Rise Smart Garden system?

You can grow pretty much anything. We have hand-picked the varieties we offer to maximize growth with our system, but we also strongly recommend trying something new! The one limitation that we are still figuring out is size. With our Tall levels you can really only grow dwarf varieties of plants successfully. This means that most of the plants you find in a plant store (tomatoes, eggplants, corn, etc.) won't do well in our system, simply because they will get too big.

However, you can start them in our system and then transplant them to your garden! To do so might require some planning on your part, but it will get your garden started fast and get you growing sooner than anyone else.

Q: How often do I change out plants?

To start a new plant place your pre-seeded plant pod into the provided nursery and wait the appropriate time for the seed to sprout. Once it has sprouted, it is now big enough to go into your system. Because you need this nursery stage, make sure to plan ahead when thinking through what you are going to grow and when you harvest.

Q: How do I start new plants?

To start a new plant, remove one from your box of 4 plant pods and place it inside a net cup. Then, put your pod into your nursery, add water, and wait for your plant to sprout. Once it grows to be about an inch tall, then you can put it into your garden. If you put a plant directly into your garden and you have added nutrients, you may risk your plant not germinating.

Q: Can I request types of plants or different plants then what I see in the store?

Of course! Email us with your plant suggestions and if we get enough people wanting the same plants, we will add it to our catalog.

Otherwise we offer an experimental plug which you can add seeds from your local garden stores and you can grow whatever you want.

Q: How do I store unused seeds?

In order to keep your seeds from prematurely sprouting, store your seeds in a dark environment with low humidity. Seeds like a steady temperature and so keeping them in a space where temp doesn’t change and they are out of direct light is best.

Q: Can I plant your seeds outside?

Yes you can. However, if you are planning on planting them outside, they will do best if they are started in our system and then moved outside once they are larger. This way, they have a head start and don’t have to fight so hard to grow, like they would in the soil.

Q: Can I use other plants in this system?

We recommend sticking to the seeds we provide because we have hand selected them to fit in the trays, work with our lights and grow better with nutrient mixes, but you can use your own, we just caution you to pick plants that won’t get too big as our system is best used with dwarf varieties of plants.

Q: How much LED vs sunlight do the plants need?

The system has enough light from the LEDs to grow your plants from start to finish. However, if you want to give your plants an extra boost, put your system near a window. Even though we have engineered a light panel to maximize growth, we are nowhere near the power of the sun.

Q: How do plants grow without soil?

When plants grow in soil, their roots search to find nutrients that are naturally found in soil’s organic matter. With hydroponics, the plants’ roots are suspended in water and don’t have to work as hard to find nutrients because we’ve added them directly to the water. All that soil does for plants is provide stability, structure, and nutrients. We mimic this with the net cup for stability, the plant pod and flowing water for structure, and our 3 key nutrient solutions for nutrients.

Q: How often do I need to water my plants?

Depending on the age of your plants and what you are growing (old tomatoes will drink more than young lettuce), you should only have to add water once a week. With late stage tomatoes and peppers you might have to add water twice a week.

Q: How long can I go without watering my plants?

Using your light display, make sure that your lights never go red. Even if your system turns off and your water bin is empty, we designed our inner tray to hold about 1 gallon of water that will keep your plants alive in an emergency. In order to keep your plants happy, we recommend adding water every week.

Q: How often do I need to add plant food?

You should only have to add plant food once a week. Our app can walk you through how much to add. There may be times when you add more plant food than last time, this is because your plants are getting older. Or you may add less than a previous week, this is because you have added young plants to your garden and need to lower the amount of nutrients.

Q: Are my plants organic?

While we use some organic seeds, the nutrients that we supply are not organic. However, your plants are pesticide free and produced as close to your kitchen as possible.
